THE TRIPLE
GODDESS
|

Two
bovine horns and in the middle of them a solar disk, or more
simply " )O( ". We often see this sign, particularly at sites
specializing in mystery, Wicca, pagan cults: it is a sacred
symbol which goes in meanderings of human history, as the emblem
of the Mother Goddess understood as Triple Goddess. It is in
effects the Triple Goddess it seems an encyclopedia of esoteric
messages as concept, because the Mother Earth is also associated
to the Moon and the Sun symbol in its most traditional form
dating back to the Egyptians, of course, the most ancient and
profound culture of antiquity: a goddess that we know very well
... Aset, or Isis. |

(Above, left) The Egyptian Goddess Isis: on the
head brings the bovine
lunar horns and the solar disk.

Morrigan and the Irish Brigit. (Right) The Triple Goddess today
entered into the Wiccan movement and is represented in a this
very effective, stylized symbol.

Isis,
still her: the most important Goddess of the Egyptian Pantheon
and not only, linked to the Aries, to Cassiopea, to Orion and
the Swan, it is similarly a solar divinity, having escaped to
Ra his secret name that conferred her the knowledge of the operation
of the stars. |
The red sun disk is associated with Isis, while
in pre-dinastic Egypt the bovine horns were symbols of a separate
deity, symbolizing another Mother Earth: Hathor, represented by
a cow. When Isis, with the newborn Horus in womb and pursued by
Seth that wants to kill her, has to find a shelter, she contrives
a stratagem: hide him among the reeds of the delta of the Nile,
she meets Hathor and it effects an unusual exchange. Give her
the powers of Ra, in practice Isis "undoubles" conferring to the
cow Hathor the privileges of solar divinity and at the same time
she assumes the prerogatives of the Mother Earth or rather the
taurine horns in which she could perfectly perceive the scythes
of the increasing Moon and the falling Moon. This way, Isis becomes
the Triple Goddess, equally of Hathor that will feed subsequently
the small Horus with the bovine milk. While Isis will hold Seth
away from her child, Hathor, by now alter-ego of the Goddess,
she will grow him and she will do him become strong, in sight
of the final battle among Good and Evil. In Egyptian conception,
so Dee Mothers are two interchangeable; in European mythologies
the myth is easier, because to the hornes with the solar disk
are attributed mainly lunar meanings. Nearby the Celts the Triple
Goddess is Morrigan, visible in three aspects: young girl, woman,
old, symbol of the three ages of the man but also of the increasing
Moon, Full Moon and falling. Morrigan becomes a dark divinity,
terrible, in partnership to the most dreadful power of the planet
Earth. A woman mother but also witch and it was this the most
diffused form in Europe. In Greece and in the italic area there
was Diana, in partnership to the animal world and the lunar cult:
a Goddess to be feared and to respect, equally in which we must
respect the planet Earth, loving and benevolent but also terrible
when it causes the cataclysms. For this motive the Triple Goddess
also is associated to the three aspects of the femminine: creativeness,
maintenance, destruction. The first two aspects have been approved
from the Christianity, the third one no, and it is for this that
the figure of the Christian Madonna appears at times unbearably
loving, exclusively yelding and complaining. The female one is
also destruction, as well it symbolizes another aspect of Isis-Hathor,
the Goddess lioness Sekhmet: without this concept, they will never
succeed to understand the women and with them the planet that
house us.
